Andrews Air Force Base is located about 10 miles outside of Washington, D.C. and offers numerous housing options both on and off post. You are eligible to live on base if your orders are for Andrews Air Force Base or NAF Washington. A nearby housing project known as Summerfield offers single-family dwellings. Rental homes and apartments can be found in and around the D.C. area including in the nearby communities of Clinton and Forestville. More information can be found at the housing information office or through the Andrews Relocation Assistance Program (RAP). The housing office can also provide current BAH rates for buying or renting a home. Traffic in and around the base tends to be heavier, and long commutes are typical. If you choose to live off-base, the best areas to avoid high congestion commutes are to the south and east of Andrews Air Force Base. The nearby school district is part of the Prince George’s County Public Schools which offer educational opportunities for students in K-12. Private school opportunities are also available.
Andrews Air Force Base is the home to Air Force One and is host to the 16th Wing. The unit is responsible for the maintenance of rotary-wing aircraft in support of national security. The base was established in 1943 and was combined with the Naval Air Facility Washington in 2009 to form what is now Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington. Other units stationed at Andrews are the 89th Airlift Wing and over 60 other tenants. The weather in the Washington D.C. area tends to be cold in the winter with fairly temperate summers. Andrews Air Force Base is located just 8 miles from the nation’s capital. Access to the Smithsonian, Washington Memorial, White House and Capitol building are just a short drive away.
